3 simple switches: trade pricey postpartum buys for things you already have

Some of the priciest "must-haves" on a postpartum shopping list are things you very likely already own in another form. Before you add another item to the cart, here are three simple switches that save money and, honestly, make life a little easier. None of this is about doing without. It is about spending on purpose.

Switch 1: The wrap-around nursing pillow for a firm bed pillow

Those big C-shaped nursing pillows look cozy in the photos, but in real life they can be surprisingly fussy. Trying to wrap one around your body while you are already holding a hungry, squirming baby is its own little workout. A firm pillow, the longer the better, does the same job with far less wrestling. You can tuck it under your arm, prop it at your side, and adjust it in a second. The best part is cleanup. Leaks, spit-up, and the occasional diaper blowout are going to happen, and a regular pillowcase goes straight into the wash.

Switch 2: Baby-sized towels and washcloths for the ones you already own

Baby towels are adorable, no argument there. But a regular towel dries your little one just as well, and a normal washcloth is just as soft on their skin. Honestly, any towel will do. There is no need to spend here unless you want to, or unless your linen closet could use a little refresh. If a few cute hooded towels make you happy, go for it. Just know that it is a want, not a need.

Switch 3: The fancy diaper caddy for a basket you already have

Those perfectly styled nursing and changing stations all over the internet usually feature a pricey caddy. You do not need one. A basket, a bin, or even a shoebox you already have works perfectly. Fill it with diapers, cream, a burp cloth, and a snack for you, then keep it wherever you tend to land most. The magic is having everything in one grabbable spot, not the container it sits in.

The takeaway

Postpartum is expensive enough without buying things you already own in another form. Save the money for the stuff that truly earns its place, and give yourself permission to keep it simple. You are doing great, mama.
